Our approach to human resources Our approach to human resources

Above all, the British Council is a ‘people’ organisation. Our people are our greatest asset. So the way we recruit, manage and treat our staff is a crucial factor in our ability to ‘live’ the brand values. Here are some of the ways we go about it.

OUR INDUCTION PROGRAMME

To help everyone who represents the British Council – in more than 200 offices in over 100 countries and territories – to understand the brand and our values, is a challenging task. So it is essential that we begin by recruiting people who can sign up to and represent our values.

It’s an important moment when a new member of the team joins us and is introduced to the organisation and the brand, and our induction materials are designed to provide a good, basic level of knowledge, whoever and wherever you are in the world.

VALUES IN PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

Every member of the team, up to and including staff at the most senior levels, needs to sign up to the values framework.

We need to remain conscious of how we demonstrate our values, and plan to embed them in our performance management systems. We want to be able to recognise and celebrate high levels of performance, and improve the consistency with which our values are used and reflected in our work and behaviours.
